Wie viele andere Triathleten kommt auch Gina Crawford vom Schwimmen. Im Alter von 17 Jahren gehörte sie noch dem neuseeländischen Nationalteam an, ehe sie ihre sportliche Laufbahn beendete und sich ihrem Studium widmete. Nach sieben Jahren sportlicher Abstinenz probierte sie sich 2005 erstmals im Triathlon aus. Als sie merkte, dass sich die ersten kleineren Erfolge einstellten, entschied sich Ferguson, diesen Sport nun ernsthafter zu betreiben. Sie verließ ihren Job als Mathematik-Lehrerin und mit neuen, strukturierten Trainingsplänen konzentrierte sie sich ab 2006 ganz dem Dreikampf. Das zahlte sich schon im ersten Profijahr aus: Nach ihrem fünften Platz beim IM Neuseeland belegte sie Platz zwei beim Ironman Western Australia und feierte im selben Jahr in Wisconsin auch ihren ersten Sieg. Auch abseits der Rennstrecken und des Trainings zeigt die Neuseeländerin Talente: Gina Crawford gehört als Violinistin zum Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in ihrer Heimat.
